Martin Steed, born June 2, 1943, in County Galway, Ireland passed away August 23, 2026.
Martin immigrated to the United States in 1961 when he was about 18 years old. Soon after, he was drafted to the U.S. Army Special Forces and stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. Upon his return to NYC and after working odd jobs around Queens, he joined the FDNY in 1968. He rose through the ranks to become a Chief Marine Engineer on the fireboats and worked out of Marine 9 until his retirement in 1999.
Rockaway Beach and the Irish Circle always held a special place in Martin’s heart as it was where he met his future wife of 54 years, Eileen. Martin and Eileen married in 1972 and settled in Staten Island in 1983 where they raised four daughters – Jennifer, Mary Ellen, Noreen and Bridget. Having only attained a high school diploma himself, Martin valued education above all else for his girls and would work many side jobs to ensure they all received the best education he could afford. With the help of their parents all four daughters eventually attained master’s Degrees in their respective fields; achievements Martin celebrated as if they were his own.
Martin took pleasure in the simplest things life had to offer – walks in the neighborhood, Irish chocolate, scratch-offs, a good meal and spending time with his family. He enjoyed road trips with his wife, camping in the Catskills, kicking a soccer ball with his kids, trips back to the Old Country, and watching the sun rise and set over NYC from the deck of the Fire Fighter fireboat. His greatest joy was realized with the birth of his first grandson and was multiplied many times over with the addition of each grandchild. He could think of no better way to spend an afternoon than babysitting the “little nippers”.
Simply put, Martin was a good man – a devoted husband, a loving and supportive father, a doting Daddo, an enthusiastic soccer coach, a kind and helpful friend and neighbor, a committed firefighter and a close friend of Bill W. for 50 years. His affiliation with AA was not something he was ever ashamed of and over the years he helped and sponsored many others who faced the same demons. In the spirit of Martin, if you find yourself struggling with addiction, please seek help. Let his memory serve as an inspiration to the beautiful life and legacy that is also within your reach.

Martin is survived by Eileen and his three daughters, Mary, Noreen, and Bridget, sons-in-law Greg Bordner, Greg D’Albero and Michael Hartman, seven grandchildren, and five siblings. As a family we take comfort in knowing he is now at peace alongside his beloved daughter, Jennifer, who passed away in 2024.
