Anita A. (nee Spruth) Neitzel, 91, of Westerleigh died peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.

Mrs. Neitzel, a lifelong Staten Islander, was born and raised in Port Richmond. She graduated Port Richmond HS and attended Valparaiso University in Indiana. She met her husband, Richard when he moved here from Wisconsin in 1949 and they were married in 1954.

Anita worked for I. Dupont as a secretary on the stock exchange. After starting a family, she stayed home to raise her children, settling into the Westerleigh area in 1960.

She was a member of St. John\’s Lutheran Church, where her father was the Pastor, and was baptized, confirmed and married there. All her life she has served the church teaching Sunday School, working with the Walther League, singing in the choirs, being a member of the LWML Ladies Guild, serving on the Altar Guild and several other committees along with volunteer work. Known for her sweet, kind nature, she was a woman of great faith and was never afraid to share it with anyone she met.

Anita\’s husband Richard died in 2013, and her son Kenneth died in 1993. She is survived by her son Richard E. and his wife Teresa, daughter Susan Sax, and her husband Thomas, grandchildren Katrina (William), Sabrina (Robert), Leif (Yvette), 3 great-grandchildren, Chloe, Paul and Mark, and her brother Rev. E. L. Spruth.

Visitation at Cherubini McInerney Funeral Home, 1289 Forest Ave., Monday, December 16 from 3-7pm. Funeral Service will be from St. John\’s Lutheran Church, 216 Jewett Ave at 10:30am on Tuesday December 17 followed by private cremation. In Lieu of flowers donations to St. John\’s Lutheran Music Fund would be appreciated.

  1. Richard, Susan, and family, we are so sorry for your loss. Anita was such a kind, beautiful soul. Her love for God shone through in the curiosity and care she showed during our time visits. I can hear her voice when I think of her and I know that there is so much to miss about her. May her memory be a blessing and comfort to you all as you navigate the days, weeks, months, and years ahead without her.
