S. Joann Scamardella
74, of West Brighton, Staten Island, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2025. Born on January 1, 1951, Joann proudly held the distinction of being the first baby born on New Year’s Day that year on Staten Island — a fitting beginning for a woman whose life was defined by compassion, service, and dedication to others.
She was the cherished daughter of the late Joseph J. Scamardella, Sr. and the late Angelina Scamardella (nee Maiorani). She was the beloved mother of Robert J. Dazzo and the proud and loving grandmother of Robert J. Dazzo, Jr. and Fiona Dazzo. She was the sister of Peter Scamardella, and was predeceased by her sister, Marie Markos, and her brother, Joseph J. Scamardella, Jr.
A graduate of St. Peter’s Girls High School, Joann earned her nursing degree from the College of Staten Island before graduating cum laude from the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service in 1981.
Joann began her career as a nurse in 1980, working in the head trauma unit at the former St. Vincent’s Hospital. While nursing was her first calling, Joann answered a greater family responsibility after the sudden passing of her father in 1992.
She stepped in to operate Scamardella Funeral Home Inc., becoming the third-generation owner, manager, and licensed funeral director. For 31 years, Joann faithfully ran the funeral home from its original, nearly century-old location at 332 Broadway in West Brighton — the very same building established by her grandparents, Matteo and Sophie Scamardella, in 1927.
Until illness forced her to step down, Joann remained devoted to caring for grieving families, often saying, “In my own way, I do a form of nursing here. I don’t prescribe medicine, but I take care of people — both living and deceased — the right way.”
Joann shared many traits with her late father: she was a perfectionist, a devout patriot, a woman of honesty, and a pillar of her community. She was known for serving families regardless of their means — offering payment plans, personal guidance, and hands-on care at every step.
She would often remind those around her, “God is watching — we must always do the right thing by everyone.”
Her greatest joy was building relationships with the families she served — many of whom she considered her extended family.
Beyond her professional accomplishments and caregiving heart, Joann was truly the life of the party. She had an unforgettable presence and would light up any room she entered with her larger-than-life personality, quick wit, and infectious laughter.
Whichever neighborhood eatery or local restaurant she dined at — whether on Forest Avenue, Castleton Avenue, or beyond — Joann was known for sending over rounds of drinks to friends, acquaintances, and sometimes even strangers, just to spread joy and hospitality. It was a cherished trait she proudly inherited from her father, Joseph — a people person in every sense who taught her that generosity and community always come first.
Her warmth, humor, and love of good company made her unforgettable to all who were lucky enough to know her.
Joann was an animal lover who adored her dogs, Rocky and Bailey, her cherished bird, Squire, her beloved cat, Angel, and cared for many neighborhood stray cats — treating them with the same compassion she showed everyone in her life.
Joann never missed a birthday — always calling to wish a happy birthday and sending a thoughtful card. While she had many friends and admirers, Joann often said that the families she served were her family.
Joann’s legacy is not only the century-old funeral home that bears her family’s name but the countless lives she touched with her kindness, honesty, and unwavering dedication to others.
Joann credited her beloved grandmother as her greatest inspiration — a woman whose wisdom, faith, and encouragement shaped her own path. Joann’s guiding philosophy was rooted in empathy, compassion, and a commitment to service.
“My faith, my sense of humor, and my caring spirit carried me,” she once said. “I like the fact that I didn’t walk away and leave behind my grandparents’ hard work.”
As Scamardella Funeral Home enters its second century of service, Joann’s legacy of love, integrity, and dedication will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, colleagues, and community.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Joann’s memory to the
ASPCA.

Joann was an old friend from grammer school. We had met a couple of times at our Mt. Carmel reunions and had remained friends for many years. She even visited me at my business in New Jersey, with a few other friends. She always had a fantastic sense of humor and terrific personality. I, like many other friends, will miss Joann immensely. I know that she will be the life of the party in heaven.
