Evelyn Gladys Thompson (nee Sorensen), 96, passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2025 at home in Cross Lanes WV surrounded by family. Born in Brooklyn, NY to Norwegian immigrants, she was orphaned at age 1 and grew up at the Wartburg Home in Mt. Vernon, NY. Evelyn came to Staten Island as a teenager where she met and married her late husband, Thomas (Mickey) who tragically died March 15, 1969 leaving her to raise their six daughters. She was also predeceased by her daughter Sandra C. Thompson (2024).
Evelyn was dedicated to raising more than her own children and grandchildren. She truly enjoyed helping out at Zion Lutheran Church at the preschool, Vacation Bible School, various socials and helping to put the church bulletins together. She also volunteered at Pathway Christian Academy and St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Christiansburg VA. She was an avid reader and loved to travel with her children.
Evelyn is survived by daughters Alice Thompson, Barbara Bibro (Michael), Lorraine Whitney (David), Nancy Collins (Larry), and Kirsten Mills (Dennis). She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held in the chapel at Zion Lutheran Church Staten Island where she was a lifelong member at a later date. Burial will be at Oceanview Cemetery.
