Marie and Ruth Torre, 87 & 65

Marie, 87, entered the gates of Heaven on December 29, 2022, and was soon followed by her daughter, Ruth, 65, on December 31, 2022. Although they were born and raised in Brooklyn, both were longtime Islanders who built beautiful lives here.

To those who knew Marie best will remember her as strong-willed, no nonsense, and very protective of her family, with a silly love for Donald Duck. She worked at JP Morgan Chase for many years, and most recently had worked in Macy\’s.

To know Ruth was to know that she had the kindest, gentlest, but strongest heart. Ruth\’s calling was undoubtedly teaching, as she was not only a teacher in NYC public schools for many years, but taught CCD at St Adalbert’s church. In addition, she was a lector, Eucharist minister, and was regularly involved in different clubs and councils at the church.

In 2019, Ruth was forced to retire & step down from all of these things she loved so much due to progressing ALS, with which she was diagnosed in 2018, and eventually succumbed to.

Marie and Ruth are survived by a number of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and lastly, by Stanley Drozd, Ruth\’s long-term partner and caregiver, whose devotion and love for Ruth will never be forgotten.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Cherubini McInerney Funeral Home, 1289 Forest Ave.  Family and Friends will be received on Thursday from 2-5pm & 7-9pm with a funeral mass on Friday, 10am at St. Adalbert’s RC Church. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.

  2. Ruth was a beloved friend and true leader in our education community. A woman of faith and integrity, whose visible mantra was to lead by example. Ruth will truly be missed. May she and her mother rest in peace; and may the peace of God be with all mourning this great loss.
