Very sad to hear of the passing of James DuBoise last Friday October 15, 2021. As the Founder of Studio We he was the father of the Loft Jazz movement of the early ‘70s in NYC. Studio We was the hub of planning and coordination for the NY Musicians Festival in 1971 – 73 throughout the Parks system and other music venues in the five NY City Boros. DuBoise was a mentor and leader to so many of us. He spanned the spectrum from Pittsburgh bebop to Lower East Side post bop trumpet and free jazz. We co-led a band that was active in the early 70s helping to establish legalization of SoHo “Artist-in-Residence” status that led to complete revitalization of the downtown Manhattan art scene, even though few musicians benefitted as the industrial lofts quickly became multi-million dollar housing and studio units, and thus unaffordable.
James DuBoise was a big picture guy. He is survived by his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. He is missed. There will never be another like him. RIP.
