With heavy hearts and deep love, we announce the passing of Efrain Rivera Cortes, lovingly known to many as “Freddie” or “Pancho,” who peacefully passed away at home on May 16, 2026, at 86 years old, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in Arecibo, Efrain carried the warmth, pride, and strength of Puerto Rico with him throughout his life. He later raised his family in Brooklyn and spent his later years between his beloved home in Camuy and Staten Island with his daughter, surrounded by the love of family.

Efrain was a truly remarkable man — strong, hardworking, resourceful, and endlessly devoted to the people he loved. He faced life with optimism and determination, never allowing hardships to define him. He was outspoken and straightforward, yet deeply loving, caring, generous, and sincere. If someone needed help, Efrain was the first to show up. He had a gift for making everyone feel welcomed, cared for, and at home.

A talented handyman and natural inventor, Efrain loved working with his hands. Whether he was fixing something around the house, building, creating, or crafting guitars, he took pride in everything he did. Music also brought him joy, and he especially loved playing his guitar. He also had a deep love for old cars, appreciating their character, history, and the joy of working on them. Those who knew him will forever remember his creativity, his strong work ethic, and the way he could seemingly repair almost anything.

Efrain also had an unforgettable personality that brought laughter and excitement wherever he went. He was outgoing, funny, adventurous, and always managed to surprise those around him with the things he would do. Whether he was catching an iguana with his bare hands or finding creative ways to use his Jeep to collect coconuts, he turned ordinary moments into stories his family will laugh about and cherish forever. His energy, fearless nature, and sense of humor made him one of a kind and impossible to forget.

He also gave his family many moments of laughter and love. He was a man of action who believed in getting things done without delay, and those little moments became some of the memories his family now cherishes most. His presence was larger than life, and his love for his family was even greater.

Family meant everything to Efrain. He treasured holidays, gatherings, and every opportunity to spend quality time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was the proud brother of 12 siblings and the loving father of five children with his former wife, Amelia Rivera: Wanda, Odette, Emily, Efrain Jr., and Alfred.

His legacy continues through his beloved grandchildren: Billy, Devon, Delilah, Natasha, Nicole, Sanaya, Paige, Jennifer, Jasmine, Jade, Aaron, and Jonathan; and his cherished great-grandchildren: Milania, Isabelle, Liam, Logan, Dylan, Ian, Ethan, Nyla, Luis Josias, and his newest baby, Lennox.

Efrain will be remembered as a devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend — a man whose hands built so much, but whose heart gave even more. His strength, wisdom, humor, and unconditional love will live on in all who had the blessing of knowing him.

Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing the incredible legacy he leaves behind. He will be dearly missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
