Frank M. Cangemi

December 12, 1934 ~ May 14, 2026

Frank Cangemi, a lifelong resident of northern Staten Island, died at his Randall Manor home on May 14, 2026. He was 91. In late 2021, his wife of 64 years, Jane Welter Cangemi, predeceased him. Throughout his life, Frank was known for his work ethic, leadership, and lifelong devotion to family and community.

Frank’s business career began early. By the time he was twelve years old, his paper route had grown so extensive that he managed younger carriers delivering newspapers across numerous subroutes. He got his first job in the shipping industry right out of high school, with Funch, Edye and Company in 1952. His time there was broken up by service in the US Army and Army Reserves. During this time, he also enrolled in Baruch College of the City University of New York, completing his Bachelor of Business Administration in 1965. He stayed with Funch, Edye until 1968, when he began working for Barber Steamship Lines. In his seventeen years with Barber, he filled many roles, eventually becoming the Executive Vice President. From Barber Lines, he moved to United States Navigation in the capacity as President, where he worked for an additional eight years.

Upon retiring from US Navigation, Frank started FMC International Consulting. He continued to do this consulting work for the rest of his life. He worked extensively with Victory Van Lines. Among the most interesting projects of this period was arranging worldwide shipment of large restaurant-grade barbecue equipment.

Business and leisure travel brought Frank to over 40 countries including Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, various parts of West Africa and most frequently, Oslo, Norway. As the children got older, Jane often traveled with him on business, an activity they continued to enjoy into retirement. Even after Jane passed Frank continued to explore, often traveling to Kansas City, Cleveland, and Tampa to visit his non-local grandchildren. Frank was very supportive of all his grandchildren taking pleasure in their sporting events, musical performances and academic achievements.

Frank Cangemi was also devoted to public service. While his children were growing up, he served as a Cubmaster for Cub Scout Pack 31. He served as President of the Staten Island Band Parents Club. He was an officer in the Susan Wagner High School Parent Teacher Association. When his children had grown, he moved on to serve in larger community organizations. He served as a director of Snug Harbor Cultural Center and was a director of the Board of Trustees for Sisters of Charity at Bayley Seton Hospital.

Frank was a devoted sports fan and athlete, playing football as a youth, and softball as a young man. He moved on to golf, which was a passion for the rest of his life. His love of golf was shared by his wife Jane and they enjoyed many afternoons on the golf course as well as traveling south for golf vacations every year. He was a longtime member of Richmond County Country Club where he served on the Board of Directors. In recent years, Frank joined the Clove Road Golf Club. This past year, while recovering from injury, Frank enjoyed the opportunity to ride the course with his fellow golfers.

Frank is survived by his four children and their spouses, Robert Cangemi and Robin Fornino of Safety Harbor, Florida, Steven and Kay Cangemi of Red Hook, New York, Cathy and David Carlson of Staten Island, and Thomas and Veronica Cangemi of Staten Island. His eight grandchildren are Vincent Cangemi, David, John and Evelyn Carlson, Quentin Cangemi, Claudia Cangemi, and Chaney and Trevor Cangemi. His four great-grandchildren are Angelina, Vanessa, and Sophia Carlson, and Avery Carlson. In addition to Jane, Frank was predeceased by his parents, William Cangemi and Grace Capeci Cangemi, his brother Anthony (Buddy) Cangemi and his sister Paula Ciocia.
